the Town Council of Burgaw, NC

Passed unanimously on February 12, 2008

 

RESOLUTION 2008 - ___

 

ENDORSING THE BUILDING OF A RELIGIOUS SERVICES CENTER AT PENDER CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION

 

WHEREAS,   the freedom to worship according to the dictates of one’s individual                              conscience is deeply imbedded in the fabric of American society; and,

 

WHEREAS,   religious programming has proven to be the most effective type of                                              program to reduce the extremely high rate of recidivism in American                                    prisons; and

 

WHEREAS,   inmates at Pender Correctional Institution are only able to utilize the                               facilities for worship that are provided for them; and

 

WHEREAS,   the room currently used as a 'chapel' is inadequate for the needs of a                             facility housing 765 inmates,

 

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Town of Burgaw Board of                            Commissioners that we do hereby endorse the effort of the Community Resource Council of the Pender Correctional Institution and The Pender Development Fund to construct a Religious Services Center to serve the religious needs of the inmates.
